Driver's License: If you are a new to Tennessee, and you wish to drive, you must acquire a driver's license within 30 days. If a new resident has a valid driver's license from another state, only a vision test is required. Call 865-215-2695.

Motor Vehicle Registration: Registration and plates may be purchased at the Knox County court clerk's office in the Old County Courthouse, 300 W. Main St., Room 219. New residents are required by state law to obtain Tennessee license plates for their motor vehicles within 30 days. Call 865-215-2385.

Lawson-McGhee Library: There are 17 branch offices located throughout Knoxville and Knox County including the main Lawson-McGhee Library in downtown Knoxville. A yearly subscriber's fee gives you borrowing privileges at the University of Tennessee Libraries. Contact the main library at 865-215-8750.

Residential Garbage Pick-Up: County residents must contact BFI or Waste Management of Knoxville for service. Call BFI at 865-522-0078 or Waste Management at 865-525-0529 for more information.

Voter Registration: To be eligible to vote in Knox County you may register to vote in person at the Knox County Election Commission office located at the Old County Courthouse Building, Room 218, 300 W. Main St. or at any driver's license examining station. Contact the Election Commission at 865-215-2480.

Young Williams Animal Center: For information regarding pet adoption contact the center at 865-215-6599.

Tennessee Department of Employment Security: ­ The Tennessee Department of Employment Security maintains an office in Knoxville. The agency has a listing of most available jobs in the area. For more information call 865-594-6350.

Senior Citizens Information and Referral Service, the Office on Aging, and the Senior Citizens Center: ­ These three agencies provide a wide variety of services, programs and activities for senior citizens in Knoxville. The Senior Citizen Information and Referral Service can be reached at 546-6262, the Office of Aging at 524-2786 and the Senior Citizens Center at 865-523-1135.

United Way of Greater Knoxville: ­ Chapter raises money for more than 49 agencies throughout the area. Seven panels comprised of volunteers help the United Way in various means. For volunteer information or a Community Services Guide, call the chapter at 865-523-9131.

KAT ( Knoxville Area Transit): ­This is the public bus system for Knoxville. For more information about routes and schedules, call KAT at 865-215-7800.

Knox County Schools: Students that are transferring into Knox County schools from another school district must provide proof of address & their last report card upon registration. Students who are entering Kindergarten or 1 st grade must provide the following upon registration: certified copy of child’s birth certificate, immunization records, the child’s Social Security card, and proof of address.
